Hip Roofs vs. Gable Roofs: Pros & Cons

Gable roofs are the among the most popular style roof. Construction is straight forward, gable roofs easily shed rain and snow, have attic space, and provide ventilation. In high wind and hurricane prone areas, they are less favored choices as these basic roofs can collapse or even, especially if they are overhung, be lifted up and right off the walls of the house.

Hip roofs, on the other hand, are more stable in windy conditions with their four equal sides and easily shed rain and snow. They require more complex engineering, though, and are more expensive to construct.
